Thenavattu Movie Review
November 28, 2008
Starring: Jeeva, Poonam Bajwa
Direction: V V Kathir
Music: Srikanth Deva
Production: Antony
The same old story of revenge, love, family sentiment returns in the name of Thenavattu produced by Sun Pictures. For Jeeva who generally chooses varied and challenging characters, this film will be just one more addition to his kitty and nothing more. Poonam Bajwa the heroine who has nothing to offer.
Jeeva comes to Chennai from Madurai in search of employment. He mistakes his boss Ravi Kale to be a good timber depot industrialist and makes for him sickle, saw and other tools for cutting. However Ravi Kale is a local dada whose job is to kill people.
Jeeva meets Poonam Bajwa in a temple and as can be predicted by a toddler, they fall in love. Meanwhile Ravi Kale’s son Sabi who happens to a womanizer eyes Poonam Bajwa who somehow escapes his clutches. Rajan P Dev who is a minister with the ruling party abets the carnages of Kale et al and the desperadoes always go scot-free. There is also an assistant commissioner Sai Kumar whose sister was wronged and killed by the villain clan and he is raging in anger to settle scores with them. The rest of the film deals with how the enemy camp gets decimated by the hero gang and about the revenge saga.
Debutant director V V Kathir who is in charge of story, screen play and direction should have taken extra care especially when this happens to be his first film. When many new directors with innovative ideas enter the fray everyday, Kathir’s work does not speak much.
Music by Srikanth Deva does not impress. Cinematography is just ordinary. Stunt scenes by Sumo Arasu do not try anything new.
Thenavattu is for people who just adore illogical masala flicks.

China’s economy slows, Germany’s shrinks
November 26, 2008
Recession in Germany and a slowdown in China painted a bleak economic picture on Tuesday, a backdrop which top miner BHP Billiton cited in abandoning a $66 billion bid for Rio Tinto.
China, the world’s biggest consumer of many metals, this month unveiled a 4 trillion yuan ($586 billion) spending package to prop up its economy, but growth would still likely slow to around 7.5% in 2009, the World Bank said. That would be China’s slowest growth rate since 1990. Official data confirmed Germany is in recession for the first time in five years, with foreign trade a big drag on gross domestic product in the third quarter.
After Britain announced on Monday a 20 billion pounds fiscal boost, including a 2.5 points cut in value-added tax, the United States and European Union will put their shoulders to the wheel.
The European Commission will propose on Wednesday measures to stimulate the recession-hit European economy including VAT cuts and a call for lower European Central Bank rates. A draft proposal, seen by Reuters, did not specify the size of the stimulus plan, which Germany said last week could be worth some 1% of European Union GDP.
The French government will launch a “quite massive”stimulus plan in the next 10 days, President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Tuesday. Germany is lukewarm about some of the EU’s proposals.
What started more than a year ago as a meltdown in the US market for high-risk mortgages has engulfed the world, freezing access to credit, sparking bank collapses and requiring the financial bailout of entire countries. Bank of England Governor Mervyn King said Britain’s fiscal package would mitigate its recession but not solve it.
“The most pressing is to ensure that normal bank lending is resumed,”he told a parliamentary committee. “Without that, the downturn in activity could become protracted and extremely damaging.
“Following huge losses tied to the US housing market collapse, banks continue to hoard cash rather than lend it to each other, to businesses and individuals. Corporate gloom was widespread, eclipsing relief at the rescue of number two US bank Citigroup.
Global financial turmoil forced AXA, Europe’s second-biggest insurer based on premium income, to cut its 2008 underlying profit forecast and made its 2012 financialgoals increasingly obsolete.
The world’s largest steelmaker ArcelorMittal is poised to cut 16 percent of its US workforce, beginning in January, the Wall Street Journal said. Australia’s Qantas airline said demand had slowed, forcing it to cut its 2009 profit forecast.

Test place for Yuvi..??
November 20, 2008
Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh’s match-winning hundreds in the first two one-dayers versus England could finally cement his test berth.
The 26-year-old left-hander slammed the second fastest ODI hundred by an Indian while scoring 138 not out in the first game against England.
He then put on an assured, all-round display with 118 and also took four for 28 bowling slow left-arm spin in the next to put India 2-0 up in the seven-match series.
India’s test selectors could now reward Yuvraj by recalling him to the middle-order slot vacated after former skipper Saurav Ganguly retired at the end of the 2-0 home series win over Australia earlier this month. In the first game in Rajkot, Yuvraj displayed the brutal power he did on his teenage debut eight years ago when he hit a match-winning 84 against Australia in his first one-dayer. In the second England game on Monday, he showed he could also curb his natural instinct, rescuing India from 29 for three.
Chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth believes Yuvraj is primed for a return for the two tests against England next month.
“I see Yuvi as a potential match-winner in Tests too,” he told The Telegraph. “Over the years, he has already shown he’s a match-winner in ODIs.
“There are others in the running as well (for tests), but Yuvi is definitely a front-runner.”
A perceived lack of focus has been blamed for Yuvraj not cementing a test berth despite his superb one-day performances.
SUSPECT TECHNIQUE
The presence of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Ganguly and Vangipurappu Laxman has also meant he has played just 23 matches since making his test debut five years ago.
Some experts believe his technique is inadequate against seaming deliveries on bouncier pitches.
The batsman seemed to have ironed out his flaws when he suffered a knee injury in 2006 during a training session.
He left his stamp during last year’s World Twenty20 triumph in South Africa, hitting England paceman Stuart Broad for six sixes in one over.
Recalled to the test side last December following injury to Tendulkar, he stroked a career-best 169 against Pakistan in the drawn third test in Bangalore, sealing a 1-0 series win.
But Yuvraj’s flop on the subsequent Australia tour cost him his test place.
His future looked unsure after scoring 72 runs in five outings in the one-day series win in Sri Lanka in August, losing the vice-captaincy before being ignored for the Australia tests.
Srikkanth, a former opening batsman, felt confidence Yuvraj remained the key to Yuvraj’s batting.
“I’ve never felt Yuvi has a problem focusing on what he’s required to do. I’ve always seen him as a confidence-player and such players need a couple of good knocks under their belt.”
Vaaranam Ayiram Movie Review
November 14, 2008
Starring: Suriya, Simran, Sameera Reddy, Divya
Direction: Gautham Menon
Music: Harris Jayaraj
Production: Aascar Ravichandran
Gautam Vasudev Menon’s Vaaranam Ayiram is intended to be a biography of an ordinary man. What could have been a subtly told story turns into a sloppy fare with way too much of daddy-glorification and emotional I-love-you-and-I-see-you-in-everything-dialogues. However, this memoirs-of-my-dad would have been a wonderful watch if it did not adopt a schmaltzy narrative often, more often than you think actually, interrupted with songs.
Gautam has derived inspiration for Vaaranam Ayiram from his own life and hence the movie is by and large close to real life with only very few scenes seeming out of place. Like the middle-class Surya, whose dad struggles to keep up with his family’s expenses, flies down to the USA in search of his love-at-first-sight Sameera – now that is far fetched. However, as clichéd as his love might seem, his sufferings sound more genuine – a feeling that the ‘Anjale’ song only upsurges.
The movie opens with an older version of Surya, suffering from throat cancer, succumbing to his disease. With the bare minimum background score and subdued acting, the scene helps to mound the expectations for a few minutes. The news then is conveyed to the son, played by Surya again, who is on a defense operation somewhere in Kashmir. The rest of the movie is the son’s reminiscences of his father – the son’s role overriding the father’s in the process, however.
The first half of the movie drifts away with nothing significant in the offing. In less than half-hour, it breaks into two songs. Surya (dad/son) falls in love twice and loses the love of his life. The second half, however, spruces up with the kidnap episode and the journalist rescue operation.
Vaaranam Aayiram is an out and out Surya show. When the man disrobes his tee to flaunt his rippling muscles acquired after hard slog, the ladies scream their lungs out. His subtle expressions after losing out his dad to cancer score as good as his screams and emotional turbulence after losing his girl. Surya Senior’s makeup screams for attention, though.
Simran comes a close second with her puffed eyes and refined articulation of emotions announcing that she is ageing gracefully. Sameera has a constant grin, which is adorable. But all she could come up with after seeing her stalker at her doorsteps in the US is a surprised expression after getting a scoop of her favorite ice cream unexpectedly. Surya – Sameera’s first meet in the train is well conceived and executed. Divya, however, is in her quietest form oozing loads of sophisticated attitude.
There are touching and heart-warming moments in the movie; however, they are few and far between. Like the scene in which the cancer patient dad expresses his helplessness in telling stories to his grandson since his vocal chords no longer support him and Simran’s emotional silent outburst when she is being told that her husband is about to start his final procession to the burial ground.
Harris’ music complements Thamarai’s lyrics with almost all songs, albeit termed as interruptions, hummable. And as Sudha Raghunathan breaks into the Anal Mele song in her unconventionally mellifluous voice, the movie’s sluggish pace is curtailed. Adiye Kolluthe, partly rendered by Shruti Hassan, seems to mark the beginning of Tamil punk-rock.
The three hour long movie advocates non-smoking heavily and hits the smokers hard with the harsh reality of its consequences – cancer, for instance.
Verdict - Surya show!

WINSLET’S TERRIFIC BODY
November 14, 2008
Albert – who worked with Kate and co-star Leonardo DiCaprio on upcoming movie “Revolutionary Road” – says the controversy regarding her recent Vanity Fair cover, for which she was accused of being airbrushed, is entirely unnecessary.
He said: “Kate is a serious actress but she is someone who really cares about what she looks like.”
“She is not out to be someone that she isn’t, she wants to be herself.”
“She is terrific – Kate’s body is terrific to work with.”
Kate’s representative insisted the actress only had her skin tone evened for the photo shoot, in which she posed wearing just a fur coat.
She said: “She is in terrific shape and what you see is how she looks or she would never have agreed to pose for those shots.”
Other pictures in the magazine saw the 33-year-old actress clad in black stockings and high heels.
Nice Love Quotes
November 11, 2008
1. “A kiss is a lovely trick, designed by nature, to stop words when speech becomes superfluous.”
–Ingrid Bergmen
2. Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being “in love” which any of us can convince ourselves we are.
Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.
- Captain Corelli’s Mandolin6. “Love is the beauty of the soul.”
3. “My night has become a sunny dawn because of you.”
4. “In real love you want the other person’s good. In romantic love you want the other person.”
5. “In dreams and in love there are no impossibilities.”
7. “Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies.”
8. “Each moment of a happy lover’s hour is worth an age of dull and common life.”
9. “Your words are my food, your breath my wine. You are everything to me.”
10. “In my wildest dreams, you always play the hero. In my darkest hour of night, you rescue me, you save my life.”
11. “Come live with me and be my love, and we will some new pleasures prove, of golden sands, and crystal beaches, with silken lines and silver hooks…”
12. “What I do and what I dream include thee, as the wine must taste of its own grapes…”
13. “I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach…”
14. “Take away love, and our earth is a tomb.”
–Robert Browning
15. “But to see her was to love her, love but her, and love her forever.”
16. “She walks in Beauty, like the night
Of cloudness climes and starry skies,
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes…”
17. “Like music on the waters is they sweet voice to me.”
18. “I love you, not only for what you are, But for what I am when I am with you.”
19. “You’re nothing short of my everything.”
20. “The only true gift is a portion of yourself.”
21. “Thou art to me a delicious torment.”
22. “Love distills desire upon the eyes, love brings bewitching grace into the heart.”
23. “I love her and that’s the beginning of everything.”
24. “I wished for nothing beyond her smile, and to walk with her thus, hand in hand, along a sun-warmed, flower-bordered path.”
25. “Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.”
