2008 US Open – Federer remains king

September 9, 2008

Federer dismantled Murray in less than two hours to win his 13th career Grand Slam title and his fifth straight US Open. He is now the only man in tennis history to win two Grand Slam five consecutive times (he won five Wimbledon titles).

On the strength of 20 more winners than Murray and a higher percentage of first serve points won, Federer was able to control the match from the outset. He broke Murray seven times in 10 chances and was only broken twice himself. Federer looked like the man that has won all those titles in the past, and it was vitally important that he claimed this title.

On the other hand, Murray appeared to be tired and he didn’t move or serve very well. I feel that the Del Potro and Nadal matches took a lot out of him and he just had nothing left in the tank. Regardless, it was a fantastic showing for Murray and he is now ranked a career high of #4 in the world.
